Indian restaurant with Michelin-trained chef Krishnapal Negi

We took advantage of the Eat Out To Help Out scheme last month and enjoyed a lovely meal at the beautiful 1947 London restaurant in Fitrovia 🇮🇳

For starters, we ordered the Chilli Paneer, Lamb Chops and the Wild Mushroom Tikki and Chickpea Masala. The former, although delicious, was not as spicy as other places we have visited (such as Taste Of India). Our favourite item, the Lamb Chops had an incredible smokey flavour to them, and the spicy kick was just perfect 😍 The contrasting flavours of the warm, savoury mushroom tikki and spicy chickpeas with the sweetened yoghurt and tamarind sauce was great, and the perfect starter to cool down before the main course!

Our main course included A Cup of Butter Chicken (literally served in a mug!) with the Chef’s Selection of Breads, which consisted of all our favourites, from Garlic Naan to Paratha. The Butter Chicken was sweet but tangy, as it should be 👌🏽 We also asked for the Aloo Udayagri, a simple yet mouth-watering potato dish cooked in a coriander masala. The chickpeas in the Punjabi Chana Masala were not as soft as we liked, but the flavours were still there. And of course, we ordered a Lamb Dum Biryani which consisted of very generous sizes of tender lamb cooked in aromatic basmati rice and sealed with pastry... the pastry is always our favourite part 🤤😋

The service at the restaurant was quite slow and it was almost as if staff had forgotten we had ordered! However, they did apologise and gave us 60% off our bill for the inconvenience, which went to show how much they care about customer satisfaction. A thumbs up from us! 👍🏽

The atmosphere and vibes at 1947 were great; the perfect place for a meal with friends!

1947 London

I recently had the pleasure of dining at 1947, an Indian restaurant that truly elevates the dining experience compared to traditional local establishments. The ambiance exudes sophistication, making it an ideal spot for a fine dining experience.

The restaurant offers both an à la carte menu and a set menu at a reasonable price, giving diners the flexibility to choose based on their preferences. I opted for the à la carte menu and was eager to see what the chef had to offer.

For starters, I ordered the prawns and calamari, both of which were a delightful beginning to the meal. They were perfectly cooked, crispy, and packed with flavor that really set the tone for the evening.

However, the main course was a mixed experience. The fish was overly salty for my taste, which diminished the overall enjoyment. The chicken was decent but could have benefited from being a bit more tender. Despite these minor drawbacks, the meal as a whole was satisfactory.

Overall, my experience at 1947 was enjoyable, marked by excellent starters and a commendable atmosphere. With a few adjustments to the main dishes, it has the potential to be outstanding. I look forward to returning and exploring more of the menu.

We visited 1947 yesterday for my birthday and went for the £50 per head sharing menu. The starters (samosa chaat, lamb seekh, chilli paneer, and chicken tikka) were absolutely fantastic — 10/10. Well seasoned, authentic Punjabi flavours that we all loved. The mains (butter chicken, lamb curry, palak paneer, and daal makhani) were less authentic in taste but still enjoyable, with the daal being a particular favourite at our table.

Service was mixed. The main waitress looking after us was brilliant — kind, attentive, and especially thoughtful in making sure my mum had gluten-free options throughout the meal. Unfortunately, a male staff member serving the dinner courses left a poor impression when he kicked my handbag and birthday gift out of the way on the floor rather than politely asking us to move them.

The biggest disappointment, however, was being told we could not take our leftovers home. With a £400 bill for a set menu that automatically refills mains, we didn’t even finish our first servings because the starters were so filling. It felt very wasteful, and although I raised this with staff, management still wouldn’t allow it. I’d completely understand if it was a second serving or refill, but not being able to take away the food we’d already paid for was very frustrating.

Overall, the food quality (especially the starters) and most of the service were excellent, but the policy on leftovers and the one poor interaction soured the experience. I’d recommend trying 1947 à la carte, but would advise against the set menu.

So it was my actual birthday and my boyfriend initially tried to book a table at Los Mochis, one of our favourite spots, but unfortunately, they had no availability within two hours of our desired time at 19:00. A work colleague then recommended 1947 London and even sent me a newspaper article about it.

Upon arrival, I noticed that the place was extremely busy, which was a good sign, and there were many Asian people eating there, which assured me that the food would be authentic. The decor was impressive as soon as we walked in, and the menu was even more so. To my delight, the food standard at 1947 London was much better than what I had experienced at Cinnamon Kitchen recently. It reminded me of the quality Cinnamon Kitchen used to offer, which was a pleasant surprise. My daughter and I had the mango lassi and my boyfriend had some wine.

We started with seekh kebabs, which were fantastic, and I loved how beautifully the plate was decorated. My daughter ordered some prawns for herself. For the main course, I immediately knew I wanted the biryani, while my boyfriend opted for the butter chicken with rice, and my daughter chose the lamb shank. The biryani was fantastic, albeit a bit too much food for one sitting. It was surprisingly spicy and came with a refreshing yoghurt raita.

Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert but I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday celebration at 1947 London. To top it off, my boyfriend and daughter surprised me with a lovely bottle of Jo Malone perfume (Scarlet Poppy) with my initials engraved on the lid, which was a wonderful and unexpected gift.

However, I did have a small criticism about the service. It was slow, and they didn't acknowledge my birthday at all. Considering the cost of dining out in London these days, small gestures like recognising a special occasion can make a big difference. This is something Cinnamon Kitchen did exceptionally well for my daughter a few years ago. Nonetheless, the fantastic food and the company of my two favourite people in the world made it a memorable birthday. 🎁 🎉💕

I will definitely be returning to 1947 London with my work colleagues in August, and I will only be ordering the biryani – it was that good! 👌🏽

My wife and I visited this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and it was a fantastic experience. The food was delicious, bursting with flavour, and beautifully presented. The service was outstanding — attentive, friendly, and made us feel truly special. Prices were in line with what you’d expect for dining in this area. Highly recommended for a special night out!
