I booked afternoon tea to celebrate my friend's birthday - an enjoyable Indian twist on a traditional British tea, with spiced savoury bites, and Indian inspired desserts. I had the turmeric latte which was so milky that it completely masked the turmeric. Still it helped take the chilli edge off the samosas! The crispy chakli was intriguing in a good way, but the dhokla was the real surprise. I usually find this sponge-like dish bland, but this version was lightly sweet and actually quite tasty. My favourite savoury was the sliders, I could have happily eaten several more. The Bombay sandwich was another pleasant surprise, I hadn't realised it was filled with cottage cheese and a good job was made of it! Then came the part I always look forward to most - the scones. Mmm… perfectly crusty on top and wonderfully soft inside, yummm! I paired them with a spiced chai tea, which complemented them beautifully. The rest of the desserts were ok, but the payasam, I did not enjoy! The restaurant itself is beautiful, filled with art, plates (lots of), and warm colours that evoke a sense of heritage. Service was friendly and attentive throughout. An ideal spot for a relaxed afternoon with friends or a special occasion.

My friend’s birthday afternoon tea at Colonel Saab in Holborn was an absolutely fantastic experience! The afternoon tea menu was a delightful showcase of sweet and savoury treats inspired by different regions of India, each with authentic flavours. Some of my personal favourites were the Bombay grilled sandwich, aloo boonda sliders, dhokla, samosas, chakli, mud cake cups, coconut rose laddu, and fruit tart. Everything tasted fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. The selection of teas, coffees, and hot chocolate was excellent, and the fact that you can enjoy refills made it even better. The staff were warm, attentive, and very helpful throughout. They even surprised us with a complimentary birthday treat topped with a candle, such a thoughtful gesture that made the occasion extra special. The restaurant itself has a vibrant, buzzing décor and ambience that really adds to the overall experience. The toilets were spotless, and the location couldn’t be more convenient, just a short walk from Holborn Station. Overall, I’d highly recommend Colonel Saab if you’re looking for a unique and memorable afternoon tea/lunch or dinner with an Indian twist. Perfect for special occasions or just to treat yourself!

The food and setting was spectacular.. a very different menu to any other with everything absolutely delicious. We tried dishes that were completely unknown to us, which makes for an exciting change. The Banarasi cocktail was excellent. The service was polite and courteous, though we caught them just as the kitchen was closing and they were setting up for the evening, so we may have not got the best of their attentions. Already looking forward to going back and trying the full tasting menu.

From the very first moment you step inside Colonel Saab, you’re welcomed into a warm and inviting atmosphere. The décor tells a story — rooted in Indian heritage yet stylishly curated — and it instantly sets the tone for what’s to come. The food ranges between flawless and truly mind-blowing. Classics like the butter chicken are executed to perfection, while surprising dishes such as the broccoli with cheese starter stand out as memorable highlights. Every plate feels carefully thought through. Service is impeccable: attentive without ever being intrusive. The staff gave just the right amount of time to make decisions, and service flowed seamlessly, with plates arriving and leaving exactly when they should. The cocktails deserve their own spotlight. Signature drinks are not only beautifully presented but also pair remarkably well with the dishes — a rare balance of taste and detail. Even the non-alcoholic options were crafted with the same level of care. Overall, Colonel Saab is a restaurant I would recommend to anyone. It’s a place I’ll gladly return to every time I’m in London. Add to that the fact that the prices feel fair for the quality delivered, and you have a true gem worth experiencing.
