How we verify halal.

Halal Joints is a guide you can trust because we tell you exactly what we know, how we know it, and when we last checked. We don’t hand out badges, and we don’t fake verification.

01

Sourced

We record HMC or HFA certification where it exists, and the owner or kitchen’s own statement where it doesn’t. We never invent a certificate.

02

Dated

Every halal claim carries the month it was made and who made it, so you can judge how current it is before you travel.

03

Re-checked

Our editors re-verify each city every 90 days. When a kitchen changes hands or drops halal, we flag it, even when it’s bad news.

The Halal Ladder

See every state

Every joint sits on exactly one rung and carries one number, the Halal Confidence Score. Assurance sets the band; facts move the decimal within it. Nothing buys a higher band.

9.3–9.8
Certified halal
Current certificate from a registry-recognised authority, full scope, no pork.
9.0–9.2
Naturally halal
A verified meatless menu, vegetarian, vegan or seafood-only.
8.0–8.9
Verified halal
Full scope with documents on file, but no current registry certificate.
6.5–7.9
Confirmed halal
Full scope with a fresh attestation (≤24 months) but no documents.
5.8–6.4
Halal-friendly
Partial scope, a named meat or category only; the label says which.
5.0–5.7
Ask before ordering
On-request scope, pork on premises, or stale / single-source evidence.
4.0–4.9
Cross-contamination
Halal-sourced food shares prep with non-halal (a shared grill) or is cooked with alcohol — a few options may still be OK; ask and choose carefully.
3.0–3.9
Vegetarian-friendly
Meat isn't halal, but there are vegetarian options and confirmed no cross-contamination.
1.0–2.9
Has vegetarian options
Serves non-halal meat; vegetarian options exist but cross-contamination isn't confirmed.
0
Not halal
Pork and/or alcohol, no halal and no vegetarian path.
Not halal-listed
Negative evidence, confirmed absent, revoked, or credibly contradicted.
Not yet verified
Zero evidence on file. No number, ask before you order.

Quality is measured separately, as the Rated Wonderful editor laurel, it renders beside the score and never touches it. How the score works →

We’d rather say “we don’t know” than guess.

A numeric score can never assert third-party certification, for example HMC and HFA only come from the venue holding them. Where a kitchen only offers its own word, we say so, and we date it. If halal is critical to you, always confirm on the day.
